Today on the Empowerment Zone I finally catch up on all the Ask Dr. Akilah questions. First I answer a question about foods that will help eliminate fat from the stomach. Not only do I answer this question but I also list the various foods that will keep the stomach bloated. The next question is about anemia and the foods that will help build the iron levels. The presentation for this episode is a fun one. It's titled "The health benefits of smiling". You're going to enjoy this episode.

Dear Dr. Akilah,
Summer will be here soon and I really want a flat stomach. My stomach is the hardest place to lose fat. I'm do Zumba three times a week so I stay pretty active. I wanna stay on a good diet but I can never stick to it because I have no idea what kind of meals to eat. I know to eat vegetables and fruits and stuff like that, but I don't know about any actual healthy meals to keep me full. Do you have any ideas? I'm 24 so I'm not worried about my weight, I just wanna lose the fat around my stomach, and possibly get abs. I can do any exercise you need me to do but my only problem is not knowing what to eat. Please help!
Thanks A Bunch!,

You can't focus only on your stomach and forget the rest of your body. Yes, you're young but you can't use your youth as a excuse to eat junk. If you were eating a "clean" diet you wouldn't have fat on your stomach. Remember, you can't out exercise a bad diet. I suggest eating high quantities of natural foods such as fruits, vegetables and grains. Eliminate junk foods from your diet, include clean foods consisting of 80% plant based and exercise. Do this and you'll have that flat stomach in no time.
Good Luck to You!
What’s up Doc?,
My girlfriend constantly complained about being tired, low energy and having no interest in sex. After visiting the doctor she was told that she has low iron (anemia). The MD gave her iron pills but they locked up her bowels. After getting rid of those iron pills she’s looking for a substitute. Any suggestions?

I'm happy to hear that your girlfriend stopped taking synthetic iron. I'm completely against anything made by Big Pharma! I always teach my clients to get their nutrients from food instead of a pill. With that said here's a list of liquids and foods that are high in iron.
- Liquid Chlorophyll – Can be added to lemon water, juices or smoothies
- Black Strap Molasses – can be added to herbal teas and lemon water

The Health Benefits of Smiling
How often do you smile in a day? Do you smile when you meet new people? When you see your friends? While you’re at work? Your face has 44 muscles that allow you to make more than 5,000 different types of expressions, and now it’s time to start using them — to smile!
Smiling is not only a way to share your happiness with others, but it is also good for your health and love life! Read on to find out why we need to smile at least ten times every single day!
1. Smiling Makes Us More Attractive
We are drawn to people who smile. Smiling keeps us from looking worn-down, stressed or tired. By simply smiling more often, you can improve your facial appearances for free!
2. Smiling Is Contagious
Not only does smiling make you happy, but it can also change the moods of others around you. A smiling person brings happiness with them. Smile, and you will draw people to you.
3. Smiling Makes You Happy
Try feeling sad and smiling at the same time. It simply doesn’t work. Smiling can trick the body into helping you change your mood.
4. Smiling Releases Stress
Stress can really show up in our faces. When you are stressed, take time to put on a smile. You’ll be surprised how difficult it is to continue feeling stressed while smiling and looking happy.
5. Smiling Boosts Your Immune System
Every time you smile you are boosting your immune system. When you smile, you intensify your white blood cells because you are more relaxed — helping to prevent the flu and common colds!
6. Smiling Makes You Look Younger
The muscles we use to smile lift the face, making a person appear younger. Forget the face lift, and start smiling (often) in your daily Conversations!
7. Smiling Lowers Your Blood Pressure
When you smile, there is a measurable reduction in your blood pressure. Give it a try if you have a blood pressure monitor at home. Sit for a few minutes, take a reading. Then smile for a minute and take another reading while still smiling. Do you notice a difference?
8. Smiling is a Natural Drug
Studies have shown that smiling releases endorphins, natural pain killers, and serotonin, helping to keep us sane and in a good mood!
